We have recommended and installed hundreds of EPDM Single Ply Membrane commercial roofs in Connecticut during the last four decades. EPDM Rubber Roofing is synthetic and is a very popular flat roofing membrane; it maintains its strength over time, is resistant to thermal shock and UV rays, and can last up to 30 years. Contact us to discuss EPDM options for a building you own or manage.
What is an EPDM Commercial Roof?
Ethylene Propylene Diene Terpolymer or EPDM roofing is an extremely cost-effective and durable synthetic rubber roof membrane perfect for most flat and low-slope commercial roof applications.
EPDM (Ethylene Propylene Diene Monimer)
Developed in the ‘50s and first used in the ‘60s, the main ingredients in EPDM – ethylene and propylene – are derived from oil and natural gas. While most EPDM roofs are black, the material also comes with a white coating to aid in heat reflection and reduce energy costs. What’s more, it is known to be durable, flexible, and competitively priced. EPDM is available in a wide variety of widths, ranging from 7.5 feet to 50 feet, and in 45, 60, or 90 mil thicknesses.
The top choice for low slope among architects and contractors, EPDM can be installed three ways: fully adhered, mechanically attached or ballasted, with the roofing system seams sealed with liquid adhesives or specially formulated tape.
A critical component of an EPDM Roofing system is insulation, which enhances energy efficiency, provides thermal resistance, and contributes to the overall performance of the roof. The primary form of insulation we install in EPDM Single Ply Membrane roofing systems is Polyisocyanurate or Polyiso. These rigid foam boards of varying thickness deliver high R-value per inch and are lightweight and moisture-resistant.
EPDM Commercial Roofs – Maintenance & Repair
A unique characteristic of EPDM is its ability to be repaired or restored easily – even after years of exposure to the elements. This is because EPDM maintains its integrity and flexibility over time, resisting degradation.
The first step is an inspection. Then, after repair or restoration, routine maintenance should be conducted to prevent issues before they advance. We can repair or restore Elevate (formerly Firestone) EPDM, Carlisle Syntec EPDM, Johns Manville EPDM as well as other major manufacturers.
